And yes I fully agree with you: in the first scene when they discover Michael, he is completely shell shocked (Thousand-Yard-Stare and all. just to be by far the soundest and strongest character in the movie again in the next scene which comes out of nowhere: we see an establishing shot of the small POW camp (awesome detailed set piece BTW) Still: what a movie! Another scene (among many) that truly touched me was when Michael decides not only to take a completely devastated and very weak Steven (great performance by John Savage) with them - against his initial escape plan - but he even jumps after him and carries him (won't spoil it further with details. It shows that Michael always had a heart of pure gold in him (which is shown in many more ways throughout the movie. Despite these issues: love this movie. I worked for five days as an extra on The Deer Hunter, appearing in two brief scenes as a a marine in the background/foreground in the final cut. I had the pleasure of meeting both Mr DeNiro and Mr Walken during down times on the Bangkok set. Neither were very famous yet, although DeNiro had Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and The Godfather behind him already. Walken had appeared in a few small films. I'd actually seen one of them, Next Stop Greenwich Village. and had a small part in Annie Hall before working on The Deer Hunter. They were incredibly committed to their roles, particularly DeNiro, who never left character as far I could see, even during long breaks.

I don't think i'd say nick pursued those emotions he felt during war, but that he succumbed to them. going back home would've been too much of a shock to his system - that scene where the dr. asks his parents' birthdays was like the final straw and he went on autopilot.
